Q: What is a link?
A: A link, in respect of how the search engines see it, is basically a vote for your site by someone else. It is site A saying that site B is worth looking at and so has provided a pathway to it.
Q: Why are they important?
A: Links are important because they allow some form of ranking to be done on different web sites. This ranking forms part of the search engine's algorithms that generate the search results we all try so hard to get to the top of. Taken very simplistically, if site A has 10 links pointing to it and site B has 20, site B should be ranked the higher of the two, assuming all else being equal. Of course all links are not equal, which is why other factors have to be considered, but that's another question. Links then are the lifeblood of your site. If you have no links you have nothing fuelling it so it will die.
Q: How many links do I need?
A: If you think how links are perceived then the answer should always be MORE.
Q: How do I add the code?
A: Its easy. Just copy and paste the code as provided into the page you are using. The one thing to remember is to add it into the code view rather than design view. Using design view will apply it as simple text and not html code, meaning it will not work.
